BROOCH

Unique ID: IOW-4BD83B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete Iron Age copper-alloy La Téne 1Bc type brooch (300 BC-200 BC).

The pin, spring and catch-plate are missing.

At the head of the brooch there is a small portion of the spring which expands in width and thickness to form the bow. The bow is slightly convex at the front, flat at the rear and is strongly arched in side profile, maximum width: 8.9mm; maximum thickness: 2.0mm. At the front it has a central vertical groove which is flanked on either side by a minor groove. However, due to corrosion, these minor grooves are only barely visible at one end. From about mid-way along its length it tapers inwards to a break.

The pitted surface has a green patina and the breaks are abraded.

Height: 23.2mm; width: 8.9mm; thickness of bow at centre: 2.0mm. Weight: 2.31g.

The brooch is similar to that published as no. 7376 in Hull & Hawkes (1987, page 108, plate 33), from the Thames foreshore in Syon Reach, Brentwood.
