SHOT

Unique ID: PUBLIC-F9CB74

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast lead alloy shot / ball for use in a Pistol of post medieval date (AD1600-1800). The shot is flattened in shape with a relatively even patinated surface .It is flattened at both ends and seems to have been fired. It would appear to have struck an object at medium velocity. The two damaged ends are concave and the trunk of the ball /shot is distorted. The colour of the ball is a pale grey / white. The surface of the ball is relatively smooth.

Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. The context of this find / assemblage would indicate a date in the English civil war. Musket balls are discussed in Courtney's "Small Arms Accessories of the Mid-Seventeenth Century" (1988) and on page 202 of "Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition" by Geoff Egan (2005).

The ball / shot measures: 10mm length 13.4mm, width 12.5mm thick and weighs 11.4grams.

The weight suggests it was for use in a Pistol (Harding 2012, Lead Shot of the English Civil War)

Notes:

This Pistol Ball / Shot was one of over 100 lead /alloy shot of various sizes found so far, on the top of elevated ground, surrounding a medieval house

Class: Pistol Shot / Ball
