Axe brooch, length 28mm, width 17mm, depth 1mm.

The top edge of the head of the axe is flat and slightly angled upwards towards the blade, the blade is much wider than the rest of the head (10.5mm) and the bottom tip is angled inwards slightly. The bottom edge of the head curves in towards the shaft from the blade (5mm) and slightly widens from the shaft to the outer edge (6mm) on the opposite edge of the blade. The handle is narrower at the bottom(2.5mm) than at the top (4mm) and protrudes slightly out of the top section of the axe head, the artefact is surrounded by a ridge on the outside, which also separates the axe head from the handle, there is also a semicircular ridge running from the bottom right corner to the bottom left corner.

In the recesses in the remains of blue enamel.

Remains of a catch plate on the reverse although the upper section has been truncated. There are two parallel semicircular lugs with circular holes in the centre that would have held the pin bar, which is now missing.

The surface of the artefact has a rich light green patina and is rather pitted.

This type of brooch is generally thought to date to the second century although a similar example found at South Shields is thought that is maybe a 3rd century import (Allason-Jones & Miket, 1984, pp113-114).
