A complete copper alloy domed sexfoil mount, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 to AD 1600).
The mount consists of a domed head, with three intersecting incised lines on the front, creating the effect of six petals. Each petal has a semi circular lobed projection forming the edge of the petal. A complete square sectioned attachment spike is present in the centre of the reverse. The attachment spike has a 90 degree lateral bend located at the mid point.
The mount measures 33.1 mm in length, 35.9 mm wide and 16.5 mm thick. It weighs 13.8 g.
The mount is a mid green to mid brown colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of the majority of the original surface. Due to this level of abrasion, any original surface decoration and detail has been obscured or lost.
Similar sexfoil mounts have been recorded on the PAS database including WMID-D7EA12, NLM-35E0A6, PUBLIC-2D7AA4 and NLM-D39A71. All are considered to be Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval in dating.
