Copper alloy badge. Pressed metal badge of a bicycle battalion of the British Army. The badge comprises a twelve spoked bicycle wheel surmounted by a cushion crown with crossed rifles behind - though only the stocks and muzzles of the rifles are modelled. The finder kindly identifies this as of the [9th] Northern Cyclist Battalion. Ten Cyclist battalions were raised from 1908, either as Territorial units or as supplementary battalions of established Regiments. They served on cycles for home defence duties, and when at the Front would usually fulfil an infantry role. Along with other formations, they were either disbanded or converted to conventional infantry by 1922. Peter Hart kindly confirms this object as of The Northern Cyclist Battalion, citing Kipling and King vol 1 no. 1866. Suggested date: Modern, 1908-1922.
