SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: DEV-A0F834

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A Post Medieval silver seal matrix with engraved oval die, dating from c.AD 1650 - 1700. The base of the handle is octagonal in section until it reaches a raised collar at the midpoint of the handle. From the collar upwards, the handle is circular in section. Towards the top is a second wider raised collar, followed by another short section of handle. The suspension loop at the top is bulbous and has a circular perforation for attachment. The oval die is engraved with a square topped shield; within the shield is a chevron with two birds above facing right and a bird below at the centre, also facing right (the birds would face left on the seal impression). At the base of the handle is a letter 'H', presumably a maker's mark.

The arms are most likely to represent the local Southcote family (the birds in the coat of arms are likely to represent coots, a play on the name Southcote). The seal possibly belonged to Thomas Southcote or his brother, John. Thomas Southcote (AD 1622-1664), lived at Buckland Tout Saints and was an MP for Dartmouth. Thomas Southcote's two sons died whilst young and his surviving daughter died without issue. His estate passed to his brother John Southcote, who was appointed as recorder of Totnes by James II. John Southcote died in AD 1701. As the dates of Thomas and John are consistent with the date of the item, which bears the Southcote coat of arms, it is possible that it belonged to one or both of these men. Further research by a local historian may be able to conclude this.

Notes:

Due to its age and precious metal content, this item would qualify as treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.

The finder and landowner waived their right to a reward and the seal matrix was acquired by Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery.
