A complete copper alloy 'toy' cannon, of Post Medieval to Modern dating (18th to 19th Centuries AD).
The toy is described as if it was a functioning cannon:
The cascable (or cascabel) and the cascabel button has a length of about 11.1 mm. The base ring diameter is 11.4 mm. Between the base ring and the first astragal, the vent field has a length of c. 6.5 mm and the circular vent itself has a diameter of 1.8 mm. This vent is sometimes referred to as a 'touch-hole'. Two trunnions are present, one on either side. They have a length of 18.5 mm, a diameter of 3.9 mm and have a circular cross section. The muzzle astragal has a diameter of 9.2 mm, with an internal diameter of 4.8 mm. The barrel is 46.4 mm deep.
Overall the toy cannon measures 62.5 mm in length, 18.4 mm wide and 11.3 mm thick. It weighs 16.1 g.
The toy cannon is a mid brown colour, with an even surface patina.
The cannon is probably a working model and miniature cannon such as this example may not have been toys for children but may have been used by adults.
The terminology used in this description has been taken from both Blackmore 1976, page 216 and the glossary available at:http://www.history.navy.mil/cannons/cannons55.html.
