A large cast lead alloy weight dating from the Roman to the Post-Medieval period, (43-1700). The object is circular in plan. The upper face is stamped with the numerals IIII. On the upper face of the object is a slight raised rim with a circumferential groove. The lower surface is worn but undecorated. The object has a dark grey patina and weighs 425.6g. The colour of the lead in this example indicates that is it more likely to be of Post-Medieval date. It weighs 107.5g
Lead weights are common throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period. Biggs, N. & Withers, P. (2000) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. Given the growing number of these lead weights being found in the North West, it is more probable that these weights are significantly later in date (17th to 18th Centuries AD). Other examples recorded on the PAS include: LVPL-947F06, LVPL-29C770, LVPL-9463C6 and LVPL-AF7CA4.
