Iron possible Shot. Solid cast sphere, corroded overall promoting a dimpled appearance. If this is indeed a shot, it would be for a small and very early type of gun, probably of late 15th to 16th-century type. These might include swivelling guns mounted on the gunwhales of armed ships as anti-personnel weapons to sweep the decks of enemy vessels: the English warship Sovereign, with a displacement of no more than 1000 tons, mounted 110 serpentines in 1495. The early years of the English Civil War (1642-1651) saw a range of antiquated artillery pressed into service, but by then even the smaller guns would fire shot of at least one pound averdepois weight. Suggested date: possibly Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.
