Copper alloy metalworking debris. Lump of copper alloy melt which has been rapidly poured into, and has solidified in, a small hollow. The casting of ingots of lead and other metals in this way has been remarked at various periods, though it seems improbable to this reporter that this quantity of viable metal would be abandoned had this activity taken place in Prehistory or the Early Medieval period - though in the former era the chthonic properties of such a position might have been deemed significant. Medieval or Post-Medieval bell casting could take place in peripheral locations, as might the recycling of metal pots and pans. This would involve greater quantities of metal, against which the abandonment of this quantity would appear less prodigal. Suggested date: Unknown, possible Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1100-1800.
