Medieval (mid 13th to 14th century) annular brooch: The copper alloy brooch is circular in plan and has two collets. Each collet is conical and set with a white paste, possibly calcium carbonate, on each terminal. The original settings are missing. Between each collet the frame is moulded with transvers ribs and two zoomorphic heads which face each other. Between one pair of heads there is a oval void to allow for the pin and opposite a notch. The reverse of the brooch is flat and undecorated. The pin is missing. The surface of the brooch has a well developed shiny green/grey patina. It measures 18.31mm long, 18.44mm wide, 2.83mm thick and weighs 1.4g.
Similar examples can be seen illustrated in Meols (Griffiths, D. Et al 2007), Nos. 1720 to 1728. Evidence from excavated examples mentioned by Griffiths et al. (ibid. p.144) appears to suggest a mid 13th to 14th century date for this type of brooch.
