TREASURE CASE 2014 T313: Incomplete late Roman gold finger ring. The finger ring consists of a sub-oval bezel and a hoop formed of three twisted gold strands. The bezel has a raised outer rim formed from a strip of gold with the join, although worn, still visible. This rim is approximately 3.2mm high and 0.7mm thick. The rim is now distorted out of shape and the stone or intaglio it would have secured in place is missing. The internal base of the bezel is covered with a layer of white chalky material probably intended to improve the light reflecting properties of the missing stone. The sides and base of the bezel are plain.

The three gold strands which form the hoop of the finger ring are co-joined at the base of the hoop and then separate away from each other around the sides of the hoop with the two outer strands then spiralling inwards towards the central strand to form the decorative openwork shoulders. The three strands which form the hoop have each been formed of at least two finer strands of gold which were then tightly plyed together giving each strand a grooved spiral appearance.

In its present condition the ring is heavily distorted with the hoop and bezel having been flattened. Despite this distortion it is notable that the finger ring appears very small in size with an internal diameter of approximately 14mm.

Finger rings of this type are dated AD c.300-400.

Dimensions: Height from top of bezel to base of hoop: 20mm, width from side-to-side of external hoop: 13mm, thickness of hoop: 0.7mm at base of hoop, width of hoop: 7.7mm at openwork shoulders tapering to 2.5 at base of hoop (where the three strands of the hoop co-join). Internal dimensions of hoop (distorted): 13.1mm top-to-bottom and 7.6mm side-to-side. Oval bezel measures 8.6mm by 5.9mm with the surviving raised rim having a maximum height of 3.2mm and being 0.7mm thick. The ring weighs 1.9g.

Notes:

Discussion: Similar finger rings already reported and recorded under the Treasure Act include 2012 T803 found in Cambridgeshire, 2004 T356 found in Essex and 2006 T351 found in York.

The find contains a minimum of 10% gold and predates 1713. It thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of precious metal content and age.
