SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: SWYOR-1F6BC4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A lead alloy probably Medieval spindle whorl. It is circular in plan, bi-convex in profile and has a central circular aperture of diameter 9.2mm. One face is decorated with a pattern of raised radial lines and pellets, and the other face has raised pellets and a group of lines in just one area. There is a deep rounded groove across the centre of one face, distorting the edges of the centre hole. This is less patinated and is post depositional damage. Decorated whorls are normally considered to date from about AD 1200 - 1600. The whorl is 29.8mm in diameter and 8.9mm thick. It weighs 31.7g.
