Incomplete Roman copper-alloy enamelled disc brooch of 2nd century date. The brooch is circular with a concave face and a raised open-topped conical centre which probably held a stone. It is notable that the base of the cupped opening within the central cone is pierced, presumably for fixing the missing central stone or other component in place. The overall design contrasts to the broadly similar tutulus style disc brooches in that they have a flanged conical centre. Surrounding the central cone the face of the brooch is decorated with an inlaid red enamel design. The red enamel fills the spaces between components of a raised copper-alloy design consisting of a scalloped outer rim, an outer ring of circular pellets and inside this spiralling out from the central cone a flared wheel-like design of curved pointed arches reminiscent of a stylised sun motif. The pin fittings and catchplate are damaged but present on the reverse but the pin is missing. Similar brooches are illustrated in 'a Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches', p346, fig 205, numbers 1074 & 1075. see also DENO-6979D2 and DENO-DD82F8.
