An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval penannular brooch dating from about 410-699 AD. It is oval in section with lozenge-shaped terminals. The body is circular in plan, the terminals are flat and the pin is missing. Each terminal is approximately 3.3mm in thickness and decorated on the front with a series of five ring and dot motifs (one at each corner with one centrally) bordered by a single incised line; at the base of each terminal is a ribbed collar created by parallel incised grooves and ridges and there are a series of smaller groups of these ribs at intervals along the body. Only the front of the brooch is decorated. Around the edge of the brooch is a single incised line running from base to base of each terminal. The back is somewhat flat and undecorated. The brooch has a dark green patina. A similar brooch may be found on the database at PAS record ID: SOMDOR-AB3935 and NCL-030777; based on information provided by these records, the brooch may be classified as Fowler's Type G.
