Incomplete Early Saxon copper alloy Cruciform brooch of Åberg 1926, Group I, lower part of the footplate missing. The fully round top knob is cast separately and presumably attached with solder. It is waisted, decorated with three encircling grooves below and above the waist, and ends in a tab projecting in front of the headplate. This is decorated along both lateral edges with a (probably punched) broad groove containing a row of pellets. The D-sectioned bow tapers from top to base, at both of which is a rectangular panel forming facets. There is a similar transverse groove with pellets on both panels. The top of the footplate is marked by a pair of transverse narrow grooves and the break cuts across side chamfers. On the reverse a single pin lug lies between remains of the iron spring and pin bar. Unusually the pin bar survives as far as one edge of the headplate. There is no trace of a catchplate but a band of grey material suggests that it was separate and attached with solder.

Extant length and width 67.7 and 23mm. Top knob length, width and thickness 15.6, 8 and 7mm. Weight 18.53g. c.430 - c.480 AD.
