A post medieval cast lead-alloy powder charger cap of 17th century date. The cap is a sub-circular cup shape, with a flat base and vertical sides, and a lip around the rim. There is a single integral suspension loop at the base, which would have been used to secure the cap to both a gunpowder flask and a bandolier, via a looped cord (Courtenay, 1988, FRG Datasheet 11). The cap is mis-shapen and damaged, with old cracks and splits. The surface is plain and undecorated, with areas of light brown patina.
Worn by British infantry musketeers, the cap formed the lid of a gunpowder charger or flask which contained a single measure of powder. Lead caps of this type are often found on English Civil War battle sites. A similar powder charger cap is published by Read (1995), pp162, item 1090.
