A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section; it has been heavily worn through use - and has not been heavily abraded. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 10.1mm. The internal edge also has a oval shaped void in the side wall. The whorl has a cast design present on both faces although the design of each differs. That on the upper surface consists of a distinct outer band of small cells formed from cast ribs; within each cell is an indistinct symbol; between the outer band and the hole are more symbols again indistinct. The underside is decorated with evenly spaced radiating lines bordered by an inner and outer circumferential rib. Within each of the cells is either a single pellet or a vertical cross arranged in an alternating pattern. The spindle whorl has a cream - white coloured surface patina which has been eroded in several places being revealing an underlying grey coloured metal. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery). The style of decoration is most commonly seen on bi-convex whorls dated to the later medieval or post medieval period (1300-1600).

The whorl measures 30.4mm diameter, is 11.6mm thick and weighs 41.29 grams.
