A copper-alloy seemingly unifacial coin weight for a half guinea of late post-medieval date. The coin weight is square in plan with a thin rectangular cross-section. One side is stamped with the letters P G, above the numerals 2 (doublestruck) and 16; the back is plain. Between the letters, and with its top slightly above is a stamped rectangle with engrailed sides, probably a local maker's mark. The initials and numbers refer to the weight of the object in pennyweights (P 2) and grains (G 16) and refer to the weight of the gold half guinea. Weights with this design and value were issued after 1773 (Withers & Withers 1995, 53).
The metal has corroded to a red-brown colour with some patches of green corrosion product. The weight measures 14.4mm long, 13.3mm wide, is 2.9mm thick and weighs 3.56 grams/54.8 grains. As such it is c. 15% light compared to the half guinea weight (Ibid., 68).
