Roman to Medieval (1st to 14th century) buckle plate: The buckle plate is incomplete and what remains is a sub-rectangular copper alloy sheet with one narrow edge having a stepped out edge on the sides, and the edge is folded over to the reverse, originally over the strap bar. The fold has a slender slot to allow for the pin. Within the fold there are traces of iron suggesting the buckle frame was iron. The body of the buckle plate is decorated with a ring and dot at each corner of the 'step' portion and then there are three notched grooves running the length of the plate to the broken narrow edge. This break is probably quite recent. The outer face of the plate has a shiny light green/grey patina, the reverse has a matte, mottled surface. It measures 22.96mm long, 22mm wide, 2.83mm thick and weighs 2.4g.

Buckle plates are found on buckles from the Roman period through to the Medieval period. The date of this buckle plate is uncertain, but based on the surface condition, colour and style of decoration it may be Roman rather than Medieval.
