An incomplete and worn copper-alloy Roman Colchester bow brooch. It is missing the spring, pin and the majority of the catch plate due to old breaks, now worn.
The wings are rectangular, short and flat. They are separated at their centre by an integrally cast rectangular hook. This is a flattened D-shape in section and curves forwards towards the head of the brooch. The bow is oval in section and tapers to a sharp pointed foot. At the base of the bow are the remains of an integrally cast catch plate with openwork decoration. The front of the bow is decorated with a central longitudinal groove.
This brooch measures 57.78mm in length, 11.69mm in width at wings, 5.77mm in width at bow, 3.69mm in thickness at bow, 6.28g in weight.
There is a similar example published by Hattatt (Hattatt, 1989, p.296, no. 255).
