A copper-alloy late medieval or post medieval fragment of vessel repair or handle attachment. The piece is roughly rectangular in shape, though with one edge expanding in a curve, and consists of two metal sheets riveted together. Both sheets have been cut to the same shape. though one has lost about a third compared to the other. The sheets are connected by two rolled copper-alloy sheet rivets; this would have been three when the borken sheet was complete. The rivets have been pushed through from one side and is flattened and smoothed on the other, flush with the sheet. They were probably formed of kite-shaped sheets. On the face through which they emerge the surrounding metal has been raised (max. Th.: 4.2mm).

This rivet type came in between the late 15th and late 16th centuries (Egan 2005, 101). This piece may have repaired a crack in a vessel (see SUSS-881300) or been part of a handle attachment (see SOM-1E9E42). The piece now has a mid/dark-green surface colour with areas of dark-grey corrosion product. It has been slightly bent in profile, with some abrasions at its edges.
