A late early-medieval copper-alloy strap fitting (c. 11th century). The fitting has a trilobed main plate with internal etchings emphasising the design. There are two rivet holes arranged vertically down the centre and both copper alloy rivets survive. Below the lys is an integrally cast loop. This object could be a loop end for a strap guide, a bar mount, a belt or sword belt hanger or the eye section of a hooked clasp.
A comparable object from Northampton can be found illustrated in Williams (1979, 251; fig. 108, no. 18). For further discussion please see NMS-4C2396 on this database - we are grateful to Dr Pedersen for her contribution.
