Object type certainty: Certain

A copper-alloy late medieval annular buckle frame with central strap bar. The outer face of one loop is decorated with deep incised grooves, forming broad lobes in between. On the other half are two constrictions on the outer edge, both flanked by small, worn lobes. The area along the outer edge of that loop between the constrictions is decorated with multiple transverse grooves. The front is bevelled internally and externally while the back is flat and plain. The strap bar is narrowed and has a patch of iron corrosion on it, possibly from the pin. There are extensive traces of a black laquer coating especially in the grooves. The frame measures 33.5mm long, 29.2mm wide and 3.1mm; it weighs 7.28 grams.

A similar buckle is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 46), no.266, which he dates to c.AD 1400-1500.

Class: Cassels type 1.2
