A cast copper alloy ring or ferrule, probably of Roman date but of uncertain function. The ring was probably cast in a complete circle, but has broken and now has a small gap. The ends are rough and irregular patinated breaks, suggesting that the ring was not formed by rolling a strip of metal. The outer face of the ring has four grooves running around its circumference, flanking a raised central band. The hoop is D shaped in section with a smooth inner face. The interior diameter of the ring is 21.23mm which is feasible for a finger ring, but the object seems to big and chunky for this purpose. The object may have been some form of ferrule, or perhaps a ring handle from a vessel. The surface of the ring has a well developed light green patina which suggests an ancient date, with some corrosive pitting. Compare SWYOR-075250.
Notes:
This object was found in an area where cropmarks suggest a Romano-British settlement.
