A complete copper alloy cruciform horse harness pendant, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1400).
The pendant is crucifrom (cross) in shape. Each arm has a square terminal. A triangular suspension point is set at right angles to the rest of the pendant. A circular perforation (hole) is present in the centre of the suspension point and it has an internal diameter of 2.0 mm. The pendant has been modified by the addition of a domed circular sectioned copper alloy rivet through the centre. The remains of a piece of sheet copper alloy metal are present behind the rivet head. This rivet was used to secure the pendant onto a strap. Mineralised remains of the strap are present on the reverse, trapped between the pendant and a thin square copper alloy plate. The rivet is 8.3 mm long, with a head diameter of 4.9 mm.
The pendant measures 50.2 mm in length, 38.8 mm wide and 8.3 mm thick. The pendant itself is 2.4 mm thick. The copper alloy sheeting is 0.5 mm thick. It weighs 8.5 g.
The pendant is a dark brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of most of the original surface detail.
