A fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy purse bar (c. 1450-1550) of Type B3 (Ward Perkins 1940, 167-168; fig. 22).
This fragment is part of one arm and a complete integral terminal. The arm is circular in cross-section and tapers slightly towards the terminal. The bulbous terminal has two parallel circumferential grooves around its diameter creating a central ridge. There is a single groove centred diametrically across its outer face. The overall effect of the decoration is to give the terminal the appearance of a bell.
The fragment has an abraded matt green patina and the break on the arm is old.
Length: 48.67 mm; diameter of terminal: 12.06 mm; diameter of arm at break 4.67 mm tapering to 3.85 mm at terminal. Weight: 9.52 g.
