Copper alloy stirrup or pivot arm of a trebuchet or tumbrel-type folding coin balance. The arm has a stylised zoomorphic snakes head terminal with a collar. At the opposite end of the incomplete arm there is a slot, in the sides of which are two opposing holes to take a pin on which the balance beam pivoted. The arm is hollow and oval in cross section to allow the balance beam to be folded away into this gap. The portable balance was used to check the weight of coinage. The arm fragment weighs 10.9g; is 49.8mm in length and has a thickness of 5.8mm at the central pivoting section. The width of the arm across where the pivot pin would exist is 9.8mm. Parallels can be seen in Salisbury Medieval Catalogue Part 3 Fig. 42, and in Medieval Artefacts by Nigel Mills (NM.219a & b).
