STRAP END

Unique ID: BERK-56ADA7

Object type certainty: Certain

A complete cast copper alloy strap end dating to the early-medieval period. The strap end is broadly triangular in plan with the narrow end terminating in a stylised zoomorphic terminal/ Behind the beast's head are two linear recesses forming a collar. Behind the head, the strap end splays outwards to the rear terminal, which has a worn trilobed end. There are two rivet holes in each corner of the rear terminal, both of which retain the copper alloy rivet. The back panel of the strap end is undecorated, as is the reverse, which is plain and flat. This type of strap end is of Thomas's Class A, however its simplicity makes it harder to catagorise in further detail. This type of strap end would date from the later 8th century through into the early 10th century AD, c. 775-925.
