Description: Silver cuff link element of post-medieval date. The remaining element of the cuff link is a button fastener representing one half of a pair. The corresponding element and links have been lost to old breaks. The front face is decorated with the stamped design of two hearts beneath a single crown on a cross-hatched background (Lewis Type A) within a raised border.
Cufflinks and buttons with this design of a crowned heart pierced by two arrows are considered to have originally been produced to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, but continued to be used as a general symbol of love and marriage until the end of the century. Similar devices are however also found on medieval pilgrim ampulla and seal matrices.
