An incomplete copper alloy Headstud brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch is comprised of narrow rectangular wings which appear undecorated and it has a very small sub-rectangular projection from the top of the head of the brooch. On the reverse of the head are two attachment lugs through which a bar or the pin mechanism would have been fitted. From a central point, the wings taper to a rectangular-sectioned bow, which is bent sharply near the head, and terminates into a rounded foot knop. At the wider section of the upper bow the hole in which the headstud would once have been can still be seen, though the headstud itself no longer remains. The bow shows signs of decoration along the central spine consisting of two grooves running down the edges of the bow. The catchplate survives although the pin mechanism and pin proper no longer remains.
The metal is light green grey in colour. It is 45.27mm long, 6.26mm wide, 2.66mm wide and weighs 11.26g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt p.332-3, figs.191-2 and are dated to the 2nd Century AD.
