STUD

Unique ID: SF-2C8AE3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy stud or mount of Post-Medieval date. It has a domed head that is stamped or punched to give it a sexfoil appearance with deep separating each lobe or 'petal'. On the underside of the head two neighbouring lobes have initials, presumably maker's marks, comprising the letters J and M. At the centre of the back face is an integral rivet or shaft that is square in section and tapers to a sharp point, now folded flat against the back face of the head. The stud measures 16.61mm in diameter, 5.97mm in height (flattened), and weighs 2.20g.

Near identical mounts or studs have been recorded through the PAS from Suffolk (SF-CCDCB6) and elsewhere (e.g. WAW-3FA7F7) with the same initials on the back face. The current example is of probable Post-Medieval date, c.16th-18th centuries AD.
