An incomplete cast copper-alloy solid pelta shaped object, probably a modern barrel tap handle. The inside edges of the loops and the outside edge of the main curve are bevelled from a central ridge, due to filing down the casting seams. The central rectangular section has an uneven break.
On both flat faces of the object is stamped WARNER, giving the object a modern date.
58mm long, 31mm wide and 6mm thick. Weigh: 50.32g.
A number of very similar broken peltaic objects of similar construction and proportions have been recorded on this database, cf. also: SUSS-85A5E2, ESS-632ED5, SUSS-EA12D2, BH-6E5CA4 and HAMP-EFA6E4. Although these examples do not appear to feature stamped lettering, soome have been recorded as Roman vessel feet. Although this example is clearly modern due to the stamped lettering, it is possible that a similar style of cast copper alloy object in a peltaic shape was in use during both the Roman and modern periods, and so this one from Northants has been recorded for cross-referencing purposes, and as a note of caution for anyone researching such objects.
