A lead alloy impacted probable pistol ball of post-Medieval date, AD 1600 - 1850. The ball has been fired and has struck a solid object as it is now a in the shape of a flattened disc with a slightly thicker centre. It is characteristic of balls that have struck a hard flat rough surface at high velocity and can be compared to examples in Harding (2012, Lead Short of the English Civil war: a Radical Study, plate 25). The leading face displays a pattern of radiating striations. The rear face of the ball shows a raised ring of metal. This is possible the result of being fired from a "Turn-off" or breech loading pistol, caused by being pressed against the mouth of the powder chamber (ibid, plate 17). However, the ring could also suggest that the projectile is a more recent bullet rather than a pistol shot. It has a light grey patina. It is 20.7mm in diameter and 4.9mm thick. It weighs 8.51gm.
