MOUNT

Unique ID: BH-98DD43

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A post-Medieval copper-alloy strap fitting.

The object comprises a plate and separately cast attachment. The plate is of flat section and has a trilobate top side, beneath which the sides taper towards the bottom before flaring into a ring. A series of incised swirls decorates the surface of the plate and there are the corroded iron remains of two in situ copper-alloy rivets. The second element, contained within this basal ring, takes the form of a rounded letter 'W'. This piece is of oval section and terminates in a pair of moulded, inward-facing zoomorphic heads with open jaws. The metallic composition of the two elements differs significantly: the plate has a mid green patination, whereas the attachment is dark greenish-grey.

Length: 43.8mm; width: 14.4mm; thickness: 3.7; weight: 6.97g.

Although no precise parallel could be found for this piece, its form is similar to the sword-belt mounts illustrated by Brian Read (2001: fig. 25). The recorder suggests a 16th to mid 17th century date.
