Almost complete Iron Age copper-alloy brooch. Two-piece "Glastonbury Type" brooch (see Hattat 1987, p.19) of probable -1st C date. Consists of a deep bow, which roughly describes a semi-circle measuring 11.4mm deep (internal). The bow is 4.1mm thick, with a circular cross section. There are traces of two worn transverse ribs towards the bottom of the bow. The bow is perforated at the top in order to take the axis bar. This measures 23.5mm long, by 2.7mm thick. The intact pin is situated to the right of the bow (as the brooch would have been viewed when in use) and is held in place by one remaining spring coil. To the left of the bow are four spring coils, covering the entire left side of the axis bar. The catch-plate is open, with a thinner wire-like back, extending from the lower side of the bow. The brooch measures 44.8mm high, by 19.3mm wide. Weight = 7.67g.
