Copper alloy cast buckle frame comprising two dolphins whose gaping jaws meet at and define a broad pin rest of Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA. The tails of the creatures curl back into the frame, and each has an integrally cast loop projecting from its outer edge for a separate strap bar (lost). Incised decoration comprises bands along the upper bodies of the dolphins and the outlining of their eyes; the pupils are formed by drilled pits. These buckles are associated with the Late Roman military, and are possibly from the equipment of local militia forces. Suggested date: Late Roman, 300-410.
