A copper-alloy hooked tag of probable early post-Medieval date.
The plate is circular, its domed upper surface bearing the relief-moulded letters 'IhS' (for 'Iesus Hominum Salvator', or 'Jesus, Saviour of Mankind'), executed in Blackletter, with the surrounding field cross-hatched. A ropework border extends around the circumference of the plate. The hanger extends upwards from the top of the plate, its sides diverging towards its horizontal upper bar. The rearward hook projects from the base of the plate, is of 'D-shaped' section and terminates in a sharp point.
Length: 35.5mm; width: 13.9mm; thickness: 2mm; weight: 2g.
A similar hooked tag is published by Brian Read (2008: 91, no. 319). A close parallel on the PAS database is SWYOR-54C227, for which a 16th century date is suggested.
