FINGER RING

Unique ID: ESS-72C684

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Complete gold finger ring of Post Medieval date. The band is 'D' shaped in section with a flat inner face and curved outer face. The inner face bears the lower-case italic inscription True to thee yle ever be followed by a marker's mark. The maker's mark is either MB or AW and is in a rectangular cartouche. The exterior of the finger-ring is undecorated.

There is a similar finger-ring with the inscription 'True to thee Ile ever be' in the British Museum's collection (1961,1202. 378) dated to the 17th to 18th century. Another finger-ring with the inscription 'True to thee I[ll] ever be' can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database (PAS ID: NMS-6501E3, Treasure reference: 2013 T194)

Notes:

The maker's mark is not identifiable in the standard references and so it is not possible to confirm a pre-1715 date. It is possible that this finger-ring dates to the 17th to 18th centuries and so may on the balance of probabilities constitute Treasure as defined by the Treasure Act 1996.
