COIN WEIGHT

Unique ID: SOM-2FC516

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A post-medieval copper-alloy square biface coin weight possibly for a Lion, possibly made in Antwerp. The weight is flat and on one face is an unclear raised design possibly of a lion seated left, tail curled up over haunches. This design is usually flanked by pillars with three arches above and floor below all within a beaded circular border. On the reverse there may be a hand, possibly flanked by initials, also within a beaded circular border. It is 15.3mm by 14.8mm and 3.2mm thick; it weighs 4.61g/71.0 grains

The Lion was issued from AD 1454-1460 in Burgundy by Philip the Good (AD 1419-1467) and weighed 4.25g. It continued in circulation however and a century later in 1583-1584, the Flanders lion (4.14g) was issued on the same design. This coin is corroded and such would not be expected to gain weight; the identification as relating to the later, Flanders lion remains tentative.
