FINGER RING

Unique ID: KENT-2E54D3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete hollow cast gold finger ring with light blue intaglio of Roman date.

The finger ring has been damaged; the bezel has been distorted out of shape and it has lost the majority of its hoop. A small part of the hoop remains bent in towards the reverse of the bezel and indicates that the ring had a narrow band of c.4mm wide. This extends into expanded shoulders and a wide bezel which have a convex outside and flat inside. The inside of the ring is damaged. It appears to be a separate sheet of gold to the exterior which has been moulded to form the interior of the ring, creating a hollow construction.

The bezel retains its flat oval intaglio setting which measures 11.01mm in length and 10.10mm wide. The gem is nicolo glass, with a dark blue substrate, and a flat, light-blue upper surface. The blue intaglio is engraved with a Capricorn with a cornucopia on its back.

Discussion: The ring shape and construction is comparable to BH-58E8E6 which is dated from the 1st to 2nd century AD. For a parallel for the intaglio see Henig 2007, no. 407.

Notes:

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
