An incomplete copper alloy Medieval (c.1100-1300) harness pendant missing part of its suspension loop and bent out of shape. It measures 31.05mm in height, 42.15mm wide and 5.45mm thick (the thickness of the metal is 1.35mm). It weighs 6.97g.
The harness pendant is in the shape of a crescent (lunate) with a suspension loop projecting from the centre of the arc so that the harness pendant would have hung with its two points at the bottom. The points have been bent in opposite directions, possibly as a result of post-depositional disturbance. There is no discernible decoration on either side. The patina is brown with patches of green corrosion product.
The lack of cast decoration and enamelling on this unusually-shaped pendant suggest a likely date of 12th to 13th century (see Ashley 2002: 5). A crescentic horse-harness pendant was found in a 14th-century context in Winchester (Biddle 1990, no. 3905).
