Cast copper alloy trade weight of Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685), circular in plan and flat in section with a lipped rim on the upper face, within which is a turned ring from the die. Within the ring are three incuse motifs around a central recessed circle, the royal cipher, a crowned 'C' at 11 o'clock, a sword, which represents the sword of St. Paul and is the mark of the City of London, at 1 o'clock, and a ewer, the Founders Company of London mark, which shows they have verified this weight, at 5 o'clock. There is no 'A' for 'averdepois' because this weight is below one ounce averdepois. It weighs 12.88g (0.46 oz) so it appears to be a half-ounce weight.
Trade weights such as this one were issued from 1558 until 1714 when weights were set standards. Read (1988) illustrates a similar weight on page 159, No.1074, which is dated from c.1625-1685. Bailey (2000) illustrates a similar trade weight of Charles I or II on page 41, Fig.32.
