The central area and gap are plugged with corrosion products which appear visually to be iron. These artefacts are normally dated to the late Bronze Age however this one might be transitional into the Iron Age if the corrosion product is indeed iron.
This artefact weight 13.47g including the corrosion filled central area. The ring has a diameter of 19.2mm and thickness of 7.6mm. The gap between the two terminals is 2.75mm wide and the central area has a diameter of 7.0mm. Wavey striations decorate the surface of this penannular ring, alternating between the yellow gold and lighter silvery coloured gold bands. Above the silvery gold striations a dark brown almost black coloured substance is present which gives greater contrast with the yellow gold that between the silver and yellow gold. The silvery striations are only visible where this substance has worn off. The relationship between the dark brown substance and silvery gold is uncertain other than the dark rests over the top of the silver gold. It is uncertain whether this dark brown substance is the remains of mud, which sits very precisely over just the silver bands, or whether it's presence is intentional and part of the original design of this artefact.
