Post Medieval lead or lead alloy palm guard. It is ovate in plan with a broad shallowly domed cross section. The flat side has a central figure of eight depression. Dates to between c1700 and c1900 AD. Such objects would have been wrapped in cloth of leather with a hole above the depressions. They were then strapped to the hand to protect the palm when tightening cord or using awls and punches in an industry such as leatherworking or sail making. Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast on occasion in mussel or oyster shells. Portable Antiquities Scheme record number IOW-A9A877 still has the shell remains.
