A cast copper alloy bar mount associated with a belt or some form of strap, probably dating to the Roman period (c. 43-410AD). The mount is rectangular in plan, with thin bevelled edges and a flat cross-section; the reverse of the mount has two protruding, integrally cast circular-headed mount rivets with sub-circular sectioned shafts and flat-topped heads. The outer surface of the mount is decorated with three raised vertical ribs, the two outer ribs being thicker and following the perimeter of the mount and the central rib thinner and possibly composed of a series of consecutive small dots. It measures 31.5 mm long, 7.7 mm wide, 7.1 mm thick (with rivet) and weighs 2.28 grams. Two nearly identical mount was found in the direct vicinity and has been recorded as: SUSS-430881 and SUSS-433583.
It is possible that these types of mounts were used predominantly in a 'military' context and many similar types have been published in Chapman 2005, A Catalogue of Roman Military Equipment in the National Museum of Wales. For further comments on a related mount, cf. PAS database record SF2860.
