A post-medieval ceramic vessel fragment; a base sherd probably dating from AD 1500 - 1700. The fabric is very hard and the fabric is a dark purplish red. The fabric contains sparse (about 5%) dull white inclusions, possibly limestone. The base would have had a diameter of about 60mm. The wall meets the base at an angle of about 80 degrees. The wall has a thickness of 4.6mm. The internal and external surfaces of the sherd are covered with a dark brown glaze, all over the internal surface, and zoned on the external surface. The fabric is similar to Wenthorpe ware and other Black Wares and probably has a similar date range.
