Copper alloy handle from an unidentified tool or implement with the remains of an iron tang within a split socket. At the proximal end a knopped terminal is decorated with six oblique notches. The main body is of rectangular cross-section but decorated on both broad faces with two rows of closely spaced ovoid, round-based notches. These cease at the start of the socket. That only a 12mm length of the tang is embedded in the socket and that there are no rivets suggest the implement was not used for any very robust purpose. Several similar handles with terminals of various designs have been recorded in Norfolk (see NMS-8572C8 and NMS-98D121).
Length 72mm. Width 8.5mm. Thickness 5.5mm. The main body tapers slightly from the collar towards the socket (width 6.8 - 4.2mm, thickness 6.2 - 3.5mm).
17th - 18th century.
