TREASURE CASE : 2014 T84.
An incomplete silver finger ring of medieval date, found within a copper alloy thimble. Roughly one half of the ring now survives. What remains of the hoop has a thin rectangular section and tapers in width from the rectangular bezel to a break at the opposite side of the hoop. The bezel is decorated with incised lettering, possibly the letter J followed by III, however this is difficult to determine due to wear. To one side of the bezel is a foliate design featuring a branch with splayed leaves. After this feature are four groups of four incised horizontal lines in triangular panels extending alternately from the upper and lower edges of the hoop. The resulting pattern produces a zig-zag effect. The interior surface of the hoop is undecorated.
The finger ring was found within a complete copper alloy thimble of medieval date. The thimble has a circular base from which the sides taper inwards and curve towards the top where they form the crown, creating a dome. The thimble is decorated with irregular pits in continuing spiralling rings from the crown towards the base where they terminate. The base of the thimble is broken and worn.
Numerous similar thimbles have been recorded through the PAS such as: YORYM-061273, ESS-3ECD51 and HAMP-D78241. For a similar ring see BUC-5DBE84 .
