A Medieval lead boy bishop token. The obverse shows a basic bishop's mitre at the centre, possibly with a raised pellet at either side of the brow band and a single raised pellet at the two points of the mitre. A raised line surrounds this central field. The area between the edge of the flan and this raised border is occupied by eight surviving (probably originally nine) raised pellets separated by single raised lines radiating out from the external edge of the raised border around the mitre to the edge of the flan. A roughly semi-circular chunk is missing from the edge of the flan over the area where a ninth pellet would be expected. The reverse side resembles a Medieval solid long cross coin, legend is illegible. Weight is 12.09g, diameter is 29.5mm, thickness is 2.6mm. See Fletcher, E. Tokens & Tallies Through The Ages 2003, Greenlight Publishing, Chapter 4, p.28-38.
Solid cross coins with pellets in each quarter start being issued in AD 1279 and continue in use until AD 1625, so this token is likely date from within this date range.
